Sharklet™ Urinary Catheter
Each year, urinary catheters are used in more than five million patients in hospitals and extended care facilities. For patients requiring a catheter for longer than seven days, 25 percent will develop a catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). Just as staggering, CAUTIs are the leading cause of hospital-acquired infections, accounting for more than 40 percent of all HAIs. To reduce these costly infections and improve patient care, Sharklet Technologies is developing the Sharklet Urinary Catheter – a catheter manufactured with the Sharklet micro-pattern in its surface to prevent the growth of bacteria.
The company is currently developing a Sharklet Urinary Catheter through a Small Business Innovation Research Phase I grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) / National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
